Thieves robbing ATMs at local golf courses
WAUWATOSA- Thieves are knocking off local golf courses. But they aren't going after high-priced golf equipment.
ATMs make life easy for customers. But they're becoming targets for crooks.
Such is the case of one video showing two men breaking into the River Falls Recreation Center in Greenfield after hours. They walked away with an ATM.
Michele Zabel came to work back on June 1 to find the front door broken and ATM gone. "I was very surprised that, of all things, the ATM was missing," said Zabel.
Police later found the stolen ATM from Greenfield in an alley behind a woman's house on Milwaukee's north side. At first, she had no idea what was in her backyard.
It turns out the thieves have targeted golf courses in Brookfield, Greenfield and Wauwatosa.
One of the stolen ATMs weighed about 100 pounds. Thieves stole an estimated $1,500 when they hauled it away.
But when they came to the Currie Park Golf Course this weekend in Wauwatosa -- police were expecting them. They set up a camera thinking one ATM would be next on the list. When the crook broke the door, cops showed up and arrested a man before he hooked up the ATM machine as for the one stolen in Greenfield it's replaced and secure.
