MILWAUKEE - With the Wisconsin gubernatorial recall election less than a week away, the two most noteworthy candidates faced off in their first debate on Friday night.
Incumbent Republican Governor Scott Walker and his Democratic challenger, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, were set to engage in what was expected to be a heated battle.
"A lot of people scratch their heads and say 'What exactly is this recall election about?' " said Walker.
Friday night's debate was to hit on a long list of topics, everything from jobs to crime and even the Milwaukee County District Attorney's John Doe investigation.
When asked if he felt like he had a dark cloud hanging over him, Walker responded, "I feel like more than anything, it's like fighting a fight with both hands behind your back."
Barrett wants walker Walker to answer questions about his aides in the John Doe investigation.
"Why won't he release the emails that will establish once and for all whether he knew that there was a secret email system?" asked Barrett
The second question Barrett wants answered:
"Why won't he tell the public who is paying for his criminal defenses? He has amassed probably $100,000 in criminal defense fees, and he refuses to tell the public who is paying the bills."
Barrett said he would push the governor to answer those questions.
Walker was expected to push back with findings of inaccurate crime statistics in Milwaukee.
