Flyer listing teacher salaries circulating in Janesville
JANESVILLE - The school superintendent in Janesville says her teachers are hurt and angry over an anonymous flyer that is circulating the city.
"I just think this flyer is pretty sad," said Janesville Superintendent Karen Schulte in an interview with Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Jon Byman.
"This flyer is being passed out by this group that are vilifying our teachers, and here, we have so many wonderful, good teachers that donate their time, and they're very passionate about education."
The flyer lists salaries for Janesville school teachers. It then encourages people to use the iverifytherecall.com website to, as the flier puts it, "determine if any of those teachers furthered the wasteful $20 million dollar taxpayer funded recall."
Then the flyer includes a pre-printed card requesting a child "be assigned to a classroom taught by a non-radical teacher."
The cards are supposed to be mailed to Superintendent Karen Schulte, who retorted "I have no idea what (non-radical teacher) is supposed to mean."
She says if she gets any of those signed cards, "they're going in the trash."
Schulte says signing a recall petition doesn't lessen a teacher's ability to teach.
"If they are making derogatory comments, for example, about the Governor in the classroom, then I would have concern about that."
Shulte says she was given a flier over the weekend at an event to benefit children in Haiti. Many of the people volunteering their time at that event were Janesville teachers.
"I don't know who is behind this. These people are not willing to come to the table and talk to me about their concerns. This is all anonymous, and I don't take anonymous requests."
Citizens for Responsible Government, the CRG Network, says it helped a local group make an open records request for the teacher salary information. We asked CRG to identify the group so that we could ask questions about the flyer. CRG says that group wishes to remain anonymous.
