New UWM AD: 'We have a lot of work to do here, building this program up'
MILWAUKEE- The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has hired former Ohio State athletic director Andy Geiger.
"I said I can do this again, I'm ready," said Geiger to Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Wisconsin's Afternoon News with John Mercure.
Geiger was the athletic director at Ohio State from 1994 to 2005. He oversaw several major construction projects at Ohio State, including the construction of the Jerome Schottenstein Center arena and a significant renovation of Ohio Stadium as well as overseeing one of the largest athletic programs in the country.
"It's not a problem at all, in fact it's one big one not to worry about," said Geiger about UWM not having a football program. "We have a lot of work to do here, building this program up."
The school says Geiger will begin work immediately. In a statement, Geiger said the opportunity was meaningful because he'll be working "just a few blocks from where my father was born and raised."
In addition to Geiger's service to Ohio State, he also was athletic director at University of Maryland, College Park (1990-1994), Stanford (1979-1990), University of Pennsylvania (1975-1979) and Brown University (1971-1975).
