McGee Allowed to Switch Attorneys, Trial Delayed

By Dan O'Donnell

Click here to listen to Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Dan O'Donnell update the legal situation for jailed alderman Michael McGee, Jr.

Judge Dennis Moroney ruled that Milwaukee Alderman Michael McGee, Jr. may replace Glenn Givens with former Alderwoman Larraine MacNamara-McGraw and Texas attorney Larry Jarrett in a state case against him.  McGee is also facing federal extortion charges.

McGee's state trial will now begin May 19th.

The start of the trial date is significant, because it now means McGee won't go to trial before the April general election, in which he's running for re-election.  McGee could be re-elected while he's in jail.

If McGee is convicted of a felony, he would have to leave office and there would be a special election to fill his seat.  Before today's hearing, McGee's trial was scheduled to begin on March 3rd.  That meant it may have been finished by the time of the general election.

This is the second time the trial date has been delayed.  McGee has been in jail since his arrest last May on state charges.
