MUSKEGO, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan received a warm welcome during his first meeting of two days of listening sessions in his southeastern Wisconsin district.
About 300 people gave him a standing ovation at the beginning of the Muskego meeting.
Ryan's name has come up as a potential running mate to presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney. The possibility followed him back to his district Thursday. One man told Ryan he appreciated the job he was doing in Congress and told him he preferred he keep his job rather than accept a vice presidential nomination. Ryan didn't address the comment.
As House Budget Committee chairman, Ryan authored a budget that combines deep spending cuts in safety-net programs for the poor with an overhaul of Medicare and steep drops in tax rates.
