Milwaukee attorney blasts MPD officers on handling OWI arrest last week
MILWAUKEE- One high-profile Milwaukee attorney is blasting how officers handled the arrest of Jeffrey Strasser one week ago.
Jonathan Safran told TODAY'S TMJ4 he has reviewed the video and believes police may have used excessive force. Strasser was arrested near the corner of N. Water St. and E. Juneau Ave. in his friends Lamborghini on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The department says the Muskego man had a blood alcohol level of twice the legal limit.
A video captured by a witness shows police hitting Strasser repeatedly, in what police are called focused strikes.
Officers claim Strasser was resisting arrest and the blows were needed to get him under control.
Safran presented Frank Jude several years ago. Jude was beaten by off-duty officers during a party.
During that case, a training officer testified that focused strikes should never be used to the head when a suspect is laying down.
The statement contradicts the methods officers used during Strasser's arrest. We reached out the department to see if the policy on focused strikes had changed since the Jude case.
TODAY'S TMJ4 has not received a response from MPD about that point.
