MADISON- U.S. Senator Herb Kohl is endorsing Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett for governor in the recall election of Governor Walker.

In a statement released by Herb Kohl:

"I'm supporting Tom Barrett for governor. While I wouldn't ordinarily endorse in a primary, this is no ordinary race or time. Tom's decision to run speaks volumes about who Tom is - a strong leader known around the state as someone who will work with everyone to help bring Wisconsinites together and move our state forward again."

Kohl wrote of his relationship with Barrett and considers the fellow Democrat to be "an effective and forward-thinking governor."

The endorsement comes on the heels of the AFL-CIO announcing it was backing Barrett's Democratic challenger Kathleen Falk.  Every union that has endorsed so far has backed Falk.

Barrett is running against Falk, Secretary of State Doug La Follette and state Sen. Kathleen Vinehout in a Democratic primary.

The campaign is on hyper drive with the May 8 Democratic primary is less than four weeks away.  The general election, where Walker will face whoever emerges from the Democratic primary, is June 5.
