7 MPD officers, one supervisor stripped of police powers during investigation
MILWAUKEE- Seven Milwaukee police officers and a supervisor have been stripped of their police powers and reassigned amidst an internal investigation, Milwaukee police confirmed Wednesday
The officers from District 5 have been reassigned to administrative duties.
According to MPD spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz, "we will have no further comment while the matter is pending." MPD only said the probe centers around policy violations.
Sources tell the Journal Sentinel the officers are under review for performing illegal searches that complainants felt violated their civil rights.
Sources say officers with a special gang unit were performing illegal searches--- including cavity searches on suspects. Sources tell TODAY'S TMJ4 the sergeant signed off on the searches, but under MPD policy, only a lieutenant or higher can agree to such procedures.
The investigation appears to be centering around a violation of civil rights.
TODAY'S TMJ4 tried reaching out to Milwaukee Police Association and the Milwaukee police supervisors' organization and they said a grievance has not filed by any of the eight officers under investigation.
