Assembly approves bills on sex education and abortions
MADISON - Debate is raging over sex education and abortion bills, approved by the state Assembly late Tuesday night.
One requires schools to emphasize abstinence. The other limits abortion coverage to life-or-death cases, or to pregnancies resulting from sex abuse or incest.
Rep. Sandy Pasch (D) Whitefish Bay calls the bills unrealistic.
On the sex education measure she said: "Well it's really unfortunate that they are rolling back what's been the gold standard as far as educating our young people."
And on the abortion bill Rep. Pasch said: "This has to do with private insurance coverage for women who do not want their pregnancy to end who are very concerned that they have fetal anomalies that are threatening their lives and the life of future pregnancies."
Madison-based Wisconsin Family Action supports the bills.
Spokesperson Julain Appling told TODAY'S TMJ4: "The bill that was passed in the assembly last night actually gives school districts some choice." And on the abortion bill she said: "It just prevents taxpayer money from paying for the abortions, it doesn't say that women can't have them."
The group is also spearheading a bill preventing doctors from providing abortion drugs remotely, using web cameras.
That measure will be taken up by the Assembly Thursday, one of the final votes before the end of session.
