Port Washington family stunned by son's weekend kayaking death
PORT WASHINGTON - The father of a Port Washington man who's body was found floating off the coast of Lake Michigan following a kayaking trip says he remains stunned about his son's death.
A witness spotted the body of Peter Dougherty just before noon Saturday.
The 24-year-old was found unconscious by rescue crews near the Port Washington marina. Attempts to revive the man were unsuccessful.
Rocco Dougherty says his son had texted a friend early Saturday saying he wasn't planning to hit the waters because of the dangerous conditions.
Spring-like temperatures proved to be too tempting for Dougherty, who later changed his mind. Officials reported waves as high as 5 feet in the area Saturday, conditions the Coast Guard says are too dangerous for nearly everyone to navigate.
Police say it appears Dougherty somehow became separated from his kayak.
An autopsy is expected to take place sometime this week.
