WAUWATOSA - An 11-year-old boy died after walking into the path of an oncoming train at N. 68th St. and W. State St. Monday morning, the Wauwatosa Police Department confirmed.

The victim, Joey Kramer a sixth-grader at Longfellow Middle School, was wearing headphones while walking north on the east side of 68th St. when he tried to cross the tracks just south of State St.

"A train approaching activated the gate and signals," Wauwatosa Police Chief Barry M. Weber said.  "The gate audio bells were also sounding.  The eastbound freight train sounded its horn, the boy was struck and the impact resulted in the death of the child."

Grief counselors were called to Longfellow to assist teachers and staff.

"The investigation is ongoing," Chief Weber added.  "There is no indication of negligence."
