WAUWATOSA - A small but very expensive part on your car has become a target of thieves: the catalytic converter.

A recent rash of these thefts have happened in Wauwatosa.

Sources tell TODAY'S TMJ4 that at least nine incidents have occurred in that city in the last couple weeks.

Police say, however, this is a big problem that extends beyond Wauwatosa.

Catalytic converters reduce pollution, causing emissions.

However, thieves want them for precious metals inside.

Stolen catalytic converters are sold to scrap yards for about $150, but they cost about $2,000 to replace.

Thieves target vehicles that sit higher from the ground, including trucks and SUV's, so if you drive one, you may want to be extra cautious.
