Police setting up on south side to battle drunk driving
MILWAUKEE- It's a new and tricky way to try to keep drunk drivers off the road.
There are signs scattered all over Milwaukee's south side Friday night, and police are watching how drivers react to them.
If they react like a driver under the influence -- that's a sign for police to pull 'em over.
Sgt. Al Riestra is on a mission: looking for drivers doing something wrong.
Simply driving with your brights on is enough to get pulled over by the neighborhood task force, then it's time for a sobriety test.
It's an effort police make to bust drunk drivers on Milwaukee's south side.
Police haven't picked the south side at random. Statistics show the south side had the highest concentration of drunk driving incidents last year. So it's in their targets this year."
"There's a lot of taverns. I think per square mile it has the most amount of taverns in the city of Milwaukee than any other location," said Sgt. Al Riestra.
All this police presence has a healthy side effect. It means extra officers to handle calls on non drunk driving incidents.
"We went one weekend where there was not a single shot fired or armed robbery complaint in the deployment area during deployment hours," said Sgt. Al Riestra.
