Tentative settlement in Milwaukee police beating
MILWAUKEE- A biracial man severely beaten by off-duty white police officers in 2004 has reached a tentative settlement with the city of Milwaukee.
The agreement calls for the city to pay $2 million to Frank Jude Jr.
Jude's attorney, Jon Safran, confirmed the settlement Friday, but said he couldn't comment further until after the settlement is approved.
The Common Council and Mayor Tom Barrett need to approve the settlement.
Seven former officers were sentenced in the 2004 beating of Jude outside an off-duty police drinking party in Milwaukee. Jude filed the civil rights lawsuit in 2006.
According to court records, he had asked for $30 million in damages.
Messages left for Common Council President Willie Hines and Barrett were not immediately returned.
