Governor Walker signs bill capping attorney fees
MADISON- Gov. Scott Walker has signed a bill designed to limit attorney fees.
The Republican measure requires judges to presume that attorney fees should be no greater than three times the damages awarded. Judges could go beyond that limit if they feel it's warranted, however.
The bill came in response to a Racine County case in which lemon law attorney Vince Megna got $151,250 in fees in a deal to settle a lawsuit against a Burlington car dealer. Megna alleged the dealership performed $5,000 in unauthorized repairs on his client's truck.
Megna, a Democrat, has said he's so angry over the bill he won't take on any more Republicans as clients.
Walker signed the bill Wednesday afternoon. He says the fee limits will protect job creators.
