Dairy farm to pay for clean-up of manure spill
LUXEMBURG, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin Department of Justice says a dairy farm in central Wisconsin has been ordered to pay more than $55,000 following a manure spill two years ago.
The decision was announced Wednesday against Stahl Brothers Dairy LLC. The dairy has 1,300 cows and is in the Kewaunee County town of Luxemburg.
The state says a manure pit at the dairy released more than 100,000 gallons of manure into the Kewaunee River in 2009. The DOJ says the spill affected at least 13 miles of the river.
Stahl Brothers was ordered to pay nearly $16,000 in fines, more than $24,500 in reimbursement for state response costs and $15,000 in restitution.
Dairy owner Lary Stahl says he cooperated with authorities from the outset and is glad to put the incident behind him.
