Five injured in Wind Lake house fire
WIND LAKE - A near-century old vacation lake cottage on Breezy Point Road is destroyed. The inside charred black. The siding melted. The year-round neighbors are thankful there was very low wind in Wind Lake early Sunday morning.
"We had such a calm morning," said neighbor Nick Hirsch, whose home is only 13 feet away from the destroyed home.
Neighbors took pictures of fast-acting volunteer firefighters who put the flames out quickly. The five renters left in ambulances just one day after they arrived here for a week long getaway. Wind Lake Fire Chief Rob Robins said it is not clear how the fire started.
"Fighting the fire, you get close to it, work your way away," Robins told reporters. "You go to investigate, you go from the outside in. So it takes time."
The injuries are believed to be minor. Paramedics wanted the five victims checked for smoke inhalation. One person suffered burns on a hand. All underwent treatment and evaluation at Burlington Memorial Hospital.
The Racine County Arson Task Force investigated.
Neighbors said the home is owned by an Illinois man.
