McGee, Jr. Challengers Register for Unusual Race

By Jay Sorgi

Click here to listen to Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Jay Sorgi report on what to expect in a most unexpected Aldermanic race involving a jailed incumbent.

The race for jailed Milwaukee Alderman Michael McGee, Jr.'s seat officially begins today, and it could be a most unusual race.

It could be a crowded field among 12 challengers who will probably file their papers at City Hall for the 6th district seat.

Former Alderman Fred Gordon and ViAnna Jordan, who organized a recall on McGee last year, are among those who plan to join the fray.

Community Journal editor Mike Holt tells the Journal Sentinel that so many challengers could make it easy for McGee to survive the February 19 primary, because he has a lot of supporters and others in the African-American community who consider him a martyr.

But even if McGee wins the primary, he might not make the April 1 general election ballot, because his felony state trial happens March 3.

If he's convicted on one of the felony charges, he can't serve his seat, which would mean his primary opponent would then run unopposed.
