NEW BERLIN - A man accused of stealing from New Berlin's mayor was set to appear in a Waukesha County Court on Fridya morning.
Cory Naber has been dating Mayor Jack Chiovatero's daughter.
New Berlin Police said Naber stole a pistol, iPod, jewelry and cash.
“My daughter's boyfriend needed some cash and that's what he used,” Chiovatero says.
Police arrested 22-year-old Cory Naber for allegedly stealing those items over a month's time. And according to court documents he faces at least one charge of drug paraphernalia and several charges of theft.
“I guess he admitted to it. I wasn't here. But he admitted to the cops,” Chiovatero says.
TODAY'S TMJ4 went to Naber's home to talk to his family, but they declined.
“Right now, it's a family matter. There's no comment,” one family member told our camera.
Chiovatero has been a target of crime after a heated debate over housing for people with lower incomes. Earlier this year, someone broke into his home and took tax records, banking information and a laptop.
The mayor says this is a completely separate incident than a previous break-in. However, because it is close to home he's not mad.
“I'm not upset. I'm disappointed,” Chiovatero says.
Chiovatero says this is something his family needs to work out.
“Well obviously, right now I don't trust him in my home. My daughter still talks to him and she's very, very hurt,” he says.
