Committee expands vouchers to Racine, all of Milwaukee County
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Legislature's budget committee plans to expand voucher schools to Racine and all of Milwaukee County.
Joint Finance Committee co-chair Rep. Robin Vos says the Republican-controlled committee will vote later Thursday to legalize voucher schools in those areas. Currently, vouchers are only allowed in the city of Milwaukee.
Vos says the committee also plans to do away with the current enrollment cap in the program and also loosen the income requirement but not doing away with it altogether as Gov. Scott Walker had proposed.
The changes were to be added to Walker's budget, which is expected to be sent as soon as Friday to the full Legislature. It must pass the Senate and Assembly, both of which are controlled by Republicans, and be signed by Walker before taking effect.
