Milwaukee Restaurant Helps Japan Relief Effort
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee has a small Japanese community -- only about 200 people, so when the earthquake and tsunami hit their homeland, they rallied together quickly.
Fujiko Yamauchi is owner of Izumi Japanese restaurant and has been helping lead the charge.
She was fresh from the bank Monday night, and said she had just deposited donations made by her customers to the Red Cross.
Some customers have been adding a couple dollars to their bills as a donation, and Yamauchi said one regular customer dug deep to help Japan dig out.
"Some Japanese lady who dines in here quite often, she dropped off a $2,000 check to donate. That's why we've been doing it," she said.
Izumi started asking customers for donations on Saturday. As of Monday night, the restaurant had raised $2,722 for the relief effort.
