Cable Competition Bill Passes with Provisions for UW Games

By Jay Sorgi

Click here to listen to Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Jay Sorgi report on a bill passing the State Senate that could change the cable TV landscape in Wisconsin, and help more viewers watch Badgers games.

Wisconsin is one step closer to getting more competition for your cable dollars, and getting more of the state to see Badgers games on the Big Ten Network.

The State Senate passed the Cable Competition bill. It stops local cable TV franchise agreements and instead lets any cable provider buy a statewide license for $2,000/year.

This opens the door for companies like AT&T and Comcast to enter new markets in the state.

Governor Doyle says he generally supports the bill.

An amendment to the bill also may get the Big Ten Network into more homes in the state.

The amendment says that if UW agrees with an existing cable network to broadcast sporting events, any competitor that comes into the state would have to provide the same network if UW requests it.

Another bill will attempt to require arbitration between cable networks and the Big Ten and NFL Networks if they can't come to agreements.
