Suspected Repeat Drunk Driver Causes Deadly Crash in Walworth County
TOWN OF GENEVA - An elementary school student has died in a car crash. Police say that a nine-year-old boy, Carter Michael Dorwin, was the victim.
Two other people were injured. Officials describe their injuries as minor.
Police told TODAY'S TMJ4's Tom Murray that a 33-year-old man was under arrest, and that man is currently recovering from injuries at Froedtert Hospital. Online court records indicate the man has at least three previous arrests for operating while intoxicated.
According to the Town of Geneva Police Department, a two-car crash happened just before 7:00 a.m. Tuesday morning on Highway H in Lake Geneva.
Carter's mother, Nicole, was traveling with two sons in an SUV to their school. Nicole told police that she saw another car driving erratically coming toward them. She is a teacher at nearby Badger High School.
She went off to the side of the road, but the driver crossed the center line and went into her vehicle.
An initial investigation seems to show that the suspect collided into the driver's side passenger door, where Carter was sitting.
About an hour later, Carter died from his injuries.
Nicole and her other son Bradley were taken to a hospital, treated and released.
Investigators are looking into whether alcohol played into the crash.
The area of the crash happened in what is called the "Como Flats" stretch of Highway H.
Police explained that this was the first deadly crash in that community in three years.
