OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) -- The National Rifle Association has endorsed Republican Ron Johnson in Wisconsin's U.S. Senate race, saying it can trust him to defend the Second Amendment.

The NRA's Political Victory Fund said Tuesday that Johnson will fight ongoing efforts to weaken gun rights. It lauded him for supporting right-to-carry legislation and promising to vote against antigun Supreme Court nominees.

Johnson is challenging Democratic incumbent Sen. Russ Feingold in November.

Feingold ran a radio ad last month saying he's always been committed to upholding the Second Amendment.

His ad seized on comments Johnson made to a tea party group, where Johnson said he might support gun licensing. Johnson later backtracked, saying he meant to say 'permits' instead of 'licensing.'
