Wisconsin Attorney General JB Van Hollen announced Tuesday afternoon that a Forest County Sheriff's Deputy and part time Crandon Police officer likely killed himself following a shooting spree that left six other people dead.  There had been some question about whether Tyler Peterson killed himself, or whether the shot that killed him was fired by law enforcement.

In an afternoon news conference, Van Hollen said, "Peterson was shot four times, one in the left bicep and three times in the head.  Evidence suggests that the shot in the bicep came from a rifle from some distance.  The three gunshot wounds to the head included to non fatal rounds with entry points below the chin and one fatal shot that entered Peterson through the right side of the head.  Each of the three head shots were fired while the gun was in contact with his skin."

New Details About Shooting: Victims May Have Been Attempting to Hide

Van Hollen also shed more light on the events that led up to the shooting.  He says the argument that preceded the shooting was between his ex-girlfriend Jordanne Murray.  Van Hollen said, "he accused her of having a relationship with another person."  After the argument got heated, Jordanne told him to leave.

Van Hollen says Peterson left at that point, but returned minutes later.  Van Hollen said, "Peterson forcibly entered the apartment, breaking down the door.  He didn't speak.  He simply opened fire killing six young people about to enter the prime of their lives."

Three of the victims - Aaron Smith, Bradley Shultz and Lindsey Stahl - were found on or right next to the couch.  Jordanne Murry was found in the kitchen.  Leanna Thomas was found in a bedroom closet, and Katrina McCorckle was found just outside the closet.  Van Hollen says the two were apparently attempting to hide.

Van Hollen says after shooting the six victims, Peterson turned to Charlie Nietzel, who was also in the kitchen.  Peterson shot him in the leg as Nietzel pleaded for him Peterson to stop.  Van Hollen says Peterson shot Nietzel several more times.  Peterson only left when Nietzel played dead.

Following the shooting Peterson fled the scene, driving through several neighboring counties.  Van Hollen says he made calls to law enforcement in which he attempted to throw officers off his trail.  He eventually ended up at a cabin in Argonne.  He apparently met with his family for a time before eventually taking his life on the property in Argonne.

Shooter's Family Meets With Victim's Family

Van Hollen says the families of the victims have met with Tyler Peterson's family.  The families say they want the community to know that they hold no animosity toward the Petersons and they hope the community will do the same.

The families have asked people in Forest County to stop talking to the media.
