Construction Company Addresses Marquette Ramp Problems
Milwaukee--The company that designed and will fix a faulty ramp on the Marquette Interchange is talking to TODAYS TMJ4 about a history of problems on high profile projects.
HNTB designed the Wisconsin Avenue ramp in the Marquette Interchange. Late last week, state DOT officials announced it would close because cracks were showing in the support columns. HNTB is fixing the problem free of charge but says it could take 4 to 5 months to complete the work.
TODAYS TMJ4 has learned that HNTB was also linked to the collapse of an interstate ramp in Kansas City. The company also settled with the State of Minnesota after problems were discovered in parts of the Wakota Bridge in Minneapolis.
HNTB's Scott Smith says they build hundreds of bridges successfully each year and Wisconsinites should not be concerned about the few problems.
HNTB has a number of important projects in Wisconsin. The company has done work on the Mitchell Interchange and has a contract to work on the Zoo Interchange.
State officials do have links to HNTB. TODAYS TMJ4 first reported that the company has donated thousands of dollars to Governor Jim Doyle. Secretary of Transportation Frank Busalacchi's son works for HNTB.
