MUSKEGO - A Waukesha county family is mourning the loss of a child. The boy died a few days after he suffered a fluke head injury on a playground.

Bay Lane Middle School 6th grader Evan Coubal is described as an athletic, popular, well liked boy who touched many lives in his short life.

Family and friends are devastated by the tragic accident. "He was a really sweet little boy," family friend Courtney Allen said.

School officials said Evan suffered a concussion during a youth football game about a week ago. He took some time off from the game.

But on Friday, during recess, he was playing near the school's football sleds when he accidentally hit his head on one of them. He was rushed to the hospital where he died on Sunday of head trauma.

Family Friend Valerie Allen said, "It doesn't seem real it's so hard to accept."

Administrators met at his school on Monday to discuss how to inform his classmates and their parents about his passing.

His mother also works for the school.

The support for Evan's family is overwhelming. "We're there for his family and he'll be missed. Be as sympathetic as we can and try to help out as much as we can with them," Courtney Allen explained.

Grief counselors will be at Bay Lane Middle School when students return to class Tuesday.
