Mequon School May Be Closed For Days after Mold Problem

MEQUON - A second Milwaukee-area school has had to cancel classes due to mold.

Oriole Lane Elementary closed its doors on Tuesday morning after school officials found mold underneath benches in the school.

Classes, which had already been underway for three school days, have been canceled until crews can clean up the mess.\

Superintendent Demond Means closed the school after discovering mold in the hallways, and in at least one classroom.

"We are concerned about the mold we are starting to see," said Means.

He shut down the building and brought in cleaning crews.

This comes after Stone Bank School was forced to close for the same reason.

Stone Bank, near Oconomowoc, had cleaning crews working around the clock for four days until the mold was completely gone.

Means said that school would remain closed "until we find no evidence of mold. We hope it's just one day, but it may take a few more days."

Mold in schools has become a problem across our state.

Air quality expert Bill Freeman says our wet, muggy summer is to blame for mold growing in at least 30 Wisconsin schools.

He says it takes thorough cleaning to get rid of it.

"Eventually. sometimes it can be tricky with different rooms, but eventually they'll get it," said Freeman.

Right now, the Mequon school superintendent won't say how long classes will remain canceled.
