Teen Shoots at Off-Duty Officer
MILWAUKEE -- A 19-year-old man is in police custody after he allegedly beat his girlfriend and then shot at an off-duty Milwaukee Police Officer.
The suspect was first seen about noon Friday beating up a woman in the area of 54th and Lisbon. Witnesses called police after the suspect flashed a gun and then took off.
Officers responded to the scene and began searching for the suspect.
An off-duty officer, who had been contacted by one of the witnesses, spotted the suspect near the intersection of 57th and Wright Streets. The suspect then saw and shot at the officer; striking his vehicle. The off-duty officer returned fire. Neither the suspect or officer were injured by the gunfire.
Meanwhile, another off-duty officer heard the gunfire, called District 3, and got a description of the suspect. He saw the suspect running in the 2400 block of N. 55th Street. The officer chased the suspect and was able to take him into custody.
The suspect has an arrest record for robbery and firearms offenses.
The off-duty officer who was shot at has been with the Milwaukee Police Department for 5 years and is currently assigned to District 7. A 25-year veteran of the department was responsible for tackling the suspect and bringing him into police custody.
