Drivers React To Ramp Closure
MILWAUKEE—As Frank Busalacchi addressed reporters late Thursday, the Department of Transportation Secretary had already ordered the closure of the ramp leading from Wisconsin Avenue to Southbound I-43.
“We will not take any chances with public safety,” said Busalacchi.
Although Busalacchi made it clear no tax payer money will be used to repair the structure crumbling beneath the ramp, drivers lined up near the suddenly closed on-ramp weren’t pleased by the news. As one driver pointed out, the Marquette Interchange is so new it doesn’t show up on her GPS.
“What kind of structural problems are they having?” asked one driver as she stopped by a row of orange barrels. “Cracking? Don’t they test the concrete and everything like that before they put something in place?”
Other drivers echoed that sentiment as they got their first look at the ramp climbing toward I-43 as deserted as a stretch of the Nevada Salt Flats.
“I think that’s terrible,” said one driver. “I mean that’s a lot of tax money that’s wasted.”
Still other commuters seemed at once unsurprised and resigned to the notion that government routinely disappoints.
“I don’t have faith in the state government,” said one driver disgustedly. “Or the city government or the county government.”
