VILLAGE OF PEWAUKEE - Maria Lewis says around 3 a.m. Sunday, a terrible noise woke her out of a deep sleep:

"It sounded like a child, like, just screaming in danger," she said.

Lewis and her husband rushed to the window of their Village of Pewaukee home and saw what she swears was a cougar:

"It was the size of a german shepherd and had a long tail," she said.

Maria says she watched as the cougar walked across an empty lot, then sat on a sidewalk curb.

Other people say they saw it too.

In fact, Village of Pewaukee Police Chief Ed Baumann says they received several phone calls from scared residents.  And he says nearly everyone described that distinctive cougar scream:

"It's been these screaming noises and some other things that have given us an idea where they may be. But again it's a needle in a haystack," said the chief.

Chief Baumann has asked the state Department of Natural Resources to investigate.

Meantime, Lewis says she's prepared to collect her own evidence if the cougar comes back:

"We did take the digital camera upstairs to the bedroom just in case."
