MILWAUKEE - Coast Guard and Milwaukee Fire Department crews have rescued a man who had reportedly fallen into the water below the Hoan Bridge.

The man fell into the water before 7:40 a.m. Thursday morning.

Corrine Grapatin told Newsradio 620 WTMJ that she tipped 911 dispatchers off to the situation.

"I saw this gentleman on the outside of the bridge," she claims.

"It looked like he was wrapped up with something around his waist.  There was a truck there, and he was drinking a cup of coffee."

She then called 911.

"I got a dispatcher, and I said 'Hey, this is gonna sound....but there's a guy on the bridge, and it looks like he's gonna jump.' "

She said the 911 dispatcher mentioned to her that construction was happening on the Hoan Bridge.

"I said, 'this doesn't look like a construction guy, and he's on the other side of the bridge.  You'd better check this out."

Coast Guard spokesman Charles Wilson told Newsradio 620 WTMJ that they got a report from 911 of a man who had fallen into the water, but was alive.

"We received a report from the 911 center, a report of a person (who had) fallen off the Hoan Bridge," said Wilson.

"The report was that the person was swimming in the water and was alive.  The Coast Guard station in Milwaukee launched two Coast Guard rescue boats.

"When they arrived on scene, with the assistance of the Milwaukee Fire Department successfully recovered him from the water.  He was transported to the shore side, where EMS was waiting, and was treating the individual."

A Milwaukee County Sheriff's spokesman said that the man is 50 years old, and that Milwaukee Police were trying to communicate with him when he was on the bridge.

His condition is unknown.  He has been transported to a local hospital.

One report said that the man was bungee jumping, but that has not been confirmed.
