TOWN OF HUBBARD - A 4-year-old girl has been killed after she was attacked by a dog at a home on East Neda Road.

Troy Erickson, a neighbor, was the first adult to notice the dog going after Taylor Becker, who was from Hustisford.

"Pulled in the driveway and ran over there. Sure enough, here was this dog on top of the girl," Erickson told TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Tom Murray.

After pulling the dog from the child, Erickson pounded on the home's window.  A woman who lives at the house and the girl's mother ran outside.  The resident was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher while the distraught parent attempted CPR.

The dispatcher asked, "somebody was bitten by a dog?"

The caller answered, "she was attacked. She's not responding... please!"

"Who's not responding?"

"The girl."

Authorities say when they got to the rural neighborhood, they found the girl unresponsive with multiple wounds.  She was taken to a Beaver Dam Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 2:00 Wednesday afternoon.

"The unbelievable effort that was put forth to try to save this girl was like nothing I've seen before in my life," said Sheriff Todd Nehls.  "We'll never know why or what occurred to make this dog snap like it did and attack this poor, innocent girl."

The Dodge County Sheriff's Department says the dog, a Boxer, was chained in the back yard.  That chain gave the dog access to most of the yard.  Authorities say the dog was not chained when they got there, but the think the dog got out of its leash during the attack.

The girl was playing in the yard.  Investigators think the attack could have happened even if the dog had remained on the leash.

The girl and her family were visiting the home where the attack took place.  The family was apparently friends with the family that lives in the home.

Authorities say they don't know of anything that would indicate a history of violence with the dog.

An autopsy on the child is planned for Thursday.

The dog has been taken to the Dodge County Humane Society.  The animal's owner told investigators that he wants the dog put down.
