Whitefish Bay Homes Flooded for 3rd Time in Month
WHITEFISH BAY - Some tense moments happened in Whitefish Bay after people got the chance to go face to face with village engineers.
That came after raw sewage flooded basements for the third time in one month.
Homeowners lined Fairmount Avenue hoping to put a stop to all this construction. They fear it will cause even more flooded basements.
Whitefish Bay homeowners voiced their anger to a village engineer over recent flooding.
"I feel like I've been punched in the stomach over and over again," said Tara Serebin through tears. "I can't describe it."
She and her neighbors near the Fairmount Avenue construction site woke up to raw sewage this past weekend.
Assistant village engineer Aaron Jahncke says this weekends flooding is caused by someone opening up a manhole and overflowing the sewer system.
"If the pumps were operational, and the manhole cover was never breached, these people would have never had water in their basement for this type of storm."
Now, people fear that paving Fairmount Avenue before fixing the sewer system will only cause more problems.
"My biggest fear is we're going to get everything paved, then they're going to find out, 'Oops, we should have done x, y z, then start all over again,' " said Serebin.
Jahncke admits that some sewer lines around the village definitely need updated, but the work along Fairmount is just fine. That's why the construction went on as scheduled.
The village said it is doing everything it can to try to make sure this doesn't happen again.
