KENOSHA -- A two-vehicle crash claimed the life of one and severely injured another Thursday night.

It happened just before 11 p.m. Thursday on Interstate-94 southbound near Highway 142.

The Kenosha County Sheriff's Department said initial investigation indicates a minivan rear-ended a semi truck. Sergeant Bill Beth said the skid marks from the van were short, which tells him the driver likely did not apply breaks in time to stop.

The passenger in the mini van, 30-year-old Shari Dorresteijn, died at the scene, deputies said.

Her husband, 34-year-old Bram Dorresteijn, was driving the van. He is in "severe critical condition" after being air-lifted to Froedtert Hospital. The married couple is from Sun Prairie.

Beth said the crash happened in construction zone and traffic in the accident location was merging down to one lane.

The truck driver, 40, from Milwaukee, sustained minor neck and shoulder injuries.

The freeway was shut down for several hours while crews investigated and cleared the crash.

All lanes of I-94 are now back open.
