Wrong Way Drunk Driver Causes Head-on Freeway Crash
Yesterday Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office dispatchers got one of those calls they never want to get; reports of a wrong way driver headed southbound in the northbound lanes on I-794 approaching the Hoan bridge.
Before deputies could get there, the wrong way vehicle, a red Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck, crashed head-on into a white Toyota RAV4 at Carferry Drive.
64 year old Robert Kieser was taken into custody for OWI-1st Causing Injury, Recklessly Endangering Safety, and Driving the Wrong Way on the Freeway. This guy was so drunk that he couldn’t even remember where or how he got on the freeway. Fortunately the driver of the vehicle he struck only suffered a broken arm. That’s almost a minor miracle.
As hammered as he apparently was, Kieser wouldn’t have even been facing a criminal charge for drunk driving if he hadn’t gotten in an accident. OWI-1st with no extenuating circumstances is not a criminal offense in Wisconsin.
We are working hard with legislators and law enforcement leaders to change that. Check out our “Under the Influence” project here.
