Janeville Drunk Drivers Shamed on Interactive Map
Janesville Police Chief David Moore is tired of drunk drivers putting all of us at risk. He says the laws that are on the books aren't working. Education isn't working, The Chief hopes shaming the drunk drivers will.
The Janesville Police Department has launched Project Sober Streets. It is an interactive website. The website features a map of Janesville with an icon on the address of each person in town who has had at least five OWI's in the last five years. If you click on each icon the photo, address, and driver's license status of each offender.
"We decided that our residents needed to know where the danger is," Chief Moore told me on Wisconsin's Afternoon News. "We also hope that armed with this knowledge some of our residents might tell us if they see something suspicious or dangerous."
Opponents say it needlessly shames people who have made mistakes.
Chief Moore says that is part of the point. "The primary goal of the program isn't too shame, but if that is part of what happens than it is what it is."
