More Child Deaths From Obesity Than Starvation
Globally more children now die from obesity related disease than from starvation according to the British medical journal, The Lancet.
Ali Mokda, a co-author of the study says, "We discovered a huge shift in mortality, Kids who used to die from infectious disease are now doing extremely well with immunization. However the world is now obese and we're seeing the impact of that."
The study found that every country on the globe, except those in sub-Saharan Africa, as alarming obesity rates. There has been an 82% globally in the past two decades. And The Lancet says more young people are now dying from obesity related disease than malnutrition.
On Wisconsin's Afternoon News we interviewed Linda Baumann, a nurse and retired professor at UW-Madison. She is nor surprised, telling us, "This (obesity) is something that we have to get under control. We're living longer, but not healthier in those late years."
