Threats to Milwaukee Cops
Most of the men and women who put their lives on the line as Milwaukee police officers are hard working, ethical and brave. Their job is extremely difficult and dangerous. When I leave for work in the morning, I know that I will come home at the end of the day. The men and women of the MPD can't say the same thing.
I have been extremely critical of how officers handled Derek Williams. Williams died handcuffed in the back of a squad car as he complained that he could not breathe. The whole incident was videotaped and has created a community backlash against Chief Ed Flynn. Many community leaders are calling for his resignation.
Last week there was a Fire and Police Commission Hearing. Chief Flynn was there and so was the family of Derek WIliams. It was heated. WIliams Aunt launched into a profanity laced tirade directed at the Chief. Milwaukee Police Association President Mike Crivello was at the hearing and says he overheard someone make a comment about how the Chief better take care of these officers or they might be taken out by someone in the community. Crivello reported the comment to the Chief and swift action was taken.
We have been able to confirm that all Milwaukee squad cars will now have two officers. That's is a change. Due to staffing and budgetary issues many squads have been rolling with only one officer.
I am sickened. I was sickened when I saw the video of Derek Williams dying in the squad car. I am now sickened by what I am hearing. Threats? Seriously? I'm with you on Derek WIlliams. What happened to him was truly tragic. (That is an overused cliche, but it applies in his case.) H should not have died in that police car, but to now threaten the men and women that serve and protect all of us is completely wrong. It is a disgrace.
People need to get a handle. What kind of society are we living in? I no longer know.
