"We Are Sikhs"
The terror of the shooting at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek is burned into our collective soul. It was sad. It was ugly. It was terrifying.
As I watched the video that day and tried to absorb the magnitude of the pain felt by innocent bystanders heading to worship, I was heartbroken. I was sad. And I was embarrassed. I was embarrassed that I had never taken the time to get to know anything about the Sikh faith. I had driven by the temples in Oak Creek and Brookfield many times. I had seen members of their community. But I had never bothered to take the time to explore even the basic tenants of what is important to these members of our community.
I was moved again today when I saw an incredibly powerful video put together by Amardeep Kalekah. He is the son of the Temple President who died a hero that day in Oak Creek. Now I get it. I understand what the Sikh culture is about. I'm sad that it took this tragedy for me to learn.
