Why I Love the Olympics

  • Print

I love the Olympics.

I'm a big sports guy and the Olympics are at the top of the list.

I'm a patriotic sap.  I get weepy when the the Boston Pops plays the "1812 Overture" during the fireworks.  tear up when I stand in New York City and look out at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. But I feel the most pride when I watch our athletes wearing the red, white & blue.

The athletes are young, they are dedicated and they do it for our country. Oh sure, there is money to be made by the most successful athletes, but that's not why the majority of them do it.  Most of the thousands of athletes will see no significant financial benefit.  Look at the men's basketball team.  The best in the world are on the team. Kobe, LeBron and others are all there.  They don't do it for the money.

The Olympics are a big deal in our house.  Four years ago we took my grandparents to Door County for a long weekend.  It was during the Olympics.  We golfed and went into town during the days. We spent every evening crowded around the TV watching gymnastics and swimming and track.  Four generations waving our flags and singing the National Anthem.

Ever since Kierra and Aimee were little they've loved to watch the games.  We cuddle up on the sofa and get our USA on. Popcorn and American flags.  Is there any better combo?

USA!  USA!!  USA!!!
