Lettuce Ladies in Racine?
The City of Racine is shutting down several street lights because of a tough budget situation. The city is removing 480 streetlights in some of the most densely lit areas. That is 6% of the city's streetlight total.
Some residents have come forward and are paying the $335 annual fee to keep the lights on in their neighborhood.
Now a possible knight is riding in on a lettuce horse! People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has sent a letter to Racine Mayor John Dickert offering to pay for two of the city's streetlights. In exchange, PETA would be allowed to place a banner featuring one of PETA's bikini-clad "Lettuce Ladies" and reading, "Get Lighter: Go Vegan".
I spoke to Mayor Dickert this afternoon. He says the council will consider the offer, as well as the broader issue of whether or not Racine wants to head down the path of using advertisers on streetlights.
