John Mercure: Mercurey Rising

Conversation with a Pearl Harbor Survivor

  • Print

I had an amazing moment this morning. I spent the morning at  a Pearl Harbor remembrance at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in Union Grove. There were veterans from World War II, the Vietnam War, the Korean War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. My grandpa Mercure was also at Pearl Harbor. He served on the USS Honolulu and was there during the attacks. Robert Feller was also there.

Robert Feller was 20 years old when Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941.  He had a much different seat than most 20 year olds.  Mr. Feller was a radioman on the USS Ogala, which was moored at Pearl Harbor on that Sunday morning.  He was delivering a message to the ship Captain when the attack began.

I spoke with Mr. Feller earlier today.  Hear it Here.
