Chris Abele and the Firework
County Exec Candidate in more trouble
So here is the story broken by Dan Bice of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
One late July evening in 2006, according to a police report, Milwaukee County Executive candidate Chris Abele was talking loudly and shooting off fireworks at his ritzy $2.6 million lake Drive home. His next door neighbor, personal injury attorney Michael Hupy, came over to Abele’s home to complain. Hupy’s girlfriend wouldn’t let Hupy near Abele. As Hupy returned next door to his own home, police say Abele lit and threw a firework at him. Abele later admitted to police that he threw the firework.
Abele was ticketed for discharging fireworks in the city, but didn’t show up for his arraignment. A warrant had to be issued for his arrest before he pleaded no contest and paid a $175 fine.
Hupy had a trespassing citation dismissed.
I was at a press conference yesterday where I asked Abele some pointed questions About his well publicized drunk driving arrest and the bench warrant that was issued for his arrest in that case.
Yesterday Abele was less than forthcoming when Dan Bice asked him about the fireworks incident at the same press conference.
So I decided to call Michael Hupy up and get his side of the story.
I spoke with Hupy this afternoon. He was very polite but less than excited to talk about the Abele incident. He did confirm that the incident took place. Hupy told me he has lived in his home for more than 22 years, and needless to say he has never before had a next door neighbor lob a firework at him.
I asked him if it was shocking to have a firework coming whizzing over the fence at him. Hupy said it was a little disconcerting and scary.
Hupy told me has not had a problem with Abele since the fireworks incident. He also acknowledged he has not had much contact with Abele, period.
Although this year Abele called and asked Hupy to vote for him. I asked Hupy if that was going to happen. Hupy laughed and said, “I don’t think so. His ‘politics’ don’t quite match up with mine.”
