The DNC Goes Pinocchio On Paul Ryan
I guess the case can be made that President Obama has offered the country "change" that at least some people can believe in. What's also beyond dispute though is that Obama's Democratic National Committee is offering claims that absolutely nobody can believe.
Virginia Governor Tim Kaine was Obama's hand-picked selection to head the Democratic National Committee. In a truly embarrassing effort to divert attention from the flame out of the Obama health care initiative, Kaine and the DNC have reverted to their old "Mediscare" tactics. You know, tell senior citizens the big lie and then hope people get distracted from the real issues.
Over Labor Day, Kaine and the DNC released an ad claiming that Republicans "voted to abolish" Medicare. The ad also claims that "Republicans want to end Medicare". As an indication of his increasing national status, Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan is one of the politicians targeted by name.
As pointed out by FactCheck.org, this ad is almost completely bogus. Even in the world of hardball politics and twisted truths, this ad hits a new low. Its so bad that you almost have to wonder if the DNC used the Greater Wisconsin Committee as a consultant on the content?
To explain why this ad is a blatant lie is to dignify it in a fashion which it doesn't deserve.
Long story short though, earlier this year, House Republicans introduced legislation designed to save the Medicare system from economic collapse. The proposal preserved the current Medicare program for individuals 55 and older and called for the government to provide subsidies (equivalent to 100% of the cost of the Medicare benefit) for the purchase of private insurance. The effect of the proposal would have been to give average citizens the same type of health care plan as is provided to members of Congress.
Boy, that sure sounds like a plan abolish Medicare! Not!
You don't have to be James Carville to see what's going on here. President Obama's approval numbers are declining, Democrats are afraid that next year's mid-term elections are going to be a political bloodbath and the President's health care initiative is struggling.
Unable to win the argument on the merits, the DNC is now reaching deep into its old grab bag of dirty tricks in an effort to change the discussion. It's really pretty pathetic and will ultimately turn out to be a waste of money.
The need to go Pinocchio on guys like Paul Ryan though does show how desperate some Democrats have become. It also shows that Paul Ryan must be doing a lot of things right!
