For our Thursday "Sound Off" question, we're asking "Whether a six month jail sentence for killing an infant while driving drunk is fair?'
The question stems from yesterday's sentencing of Shannon Baierl by Fond du Lac County Circuit Judge Richard Nuss.
In August of 2007, a car driven by Baierl crossed the center line of Highway 175 and rammed head on into into another vehicle. Three people were seriously injured in the crash. Seven-month-old Karen Garcia was killed. Baierl's blood alcohol level at the time of the crash was .27 (over three times the legal limit). She was subsequently convicted of homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle.
Yesterday, Judge Nuss put Baierl on probation for 15 years with the condition that she spend the first 6 months in a County Jail. She was also ordered to maintain absolute sobriety, to assist the surviving victims with their living expenses and to participate in six public speaking events per year.
