Last March, 22-year-old Shane McQuillan got really drunk (a blood alcohol level of .238) and drove his car into the closed gates at the Eau Claire Waste Water Treatment Facility. McQuillan had previously been convicted of drunk driving and driving on a revoked license.
In imposing sentence, Eau Claire County Judge Paul Lenz gave McQuillan a choice: twenty days in the County Jail or 8-hours standing outside the wastewater facility holding a sign that says "I was stupid". McQuillan chose the 8 hours and served his sentence on Thanksgiving Day.

Later today, we'll discuss whether the punishment imposed here fits the crime?
