Yesterday a grand jury in Harris County, Texas indicted seven members of the Morton Ranch High School cheerleading squad. The seven young women, all either 17 or 18, were charged as adults with hazing, a Class B misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of up to six months in jail.
Apparently, there is a tradition at the school where varsity cheerleaders "kidnap" the junior varsity cheerleaders and take them to breakfast. Accordingly, last July, the senior cheerleaders rounded up the jv cheerleaders, blindfolded them and tied their hands behind their backs. Instead of driving to the local IHOP however, they drove the girls to a private home and pushed them into a backyard swimming pool.
Nobody was hurt - but a number of the girls were quite shaken up. As a result of this incident. all varsity cheerleading activities were suspended for the remainder of the school year.
Later today, we'll discuss whether bringing criminal charges against "The Morton Ranch 7" is an overreaction?
