Can You Blame It On The Topless Bar?

  • Print

Micaela Liem was a topless dancer at Rick's Cabaret in Houston, Texas.  The Houston location is part of a chain of strip clubs across the country operated under the names Rick's, Onyxx or Tootsie's.  It's stock is traded on the NASDAQ global market under the symbol RICK.

During the early morning hours of December 31, 2006 Liem left Rick's and started driving home.  She subsequently hit and killed a 43 year-old cab driver named Clinton Washington.  Washington was outside his cab by the side of the freeway providing assistance to another motorist who had been involved in an accident.

At the time Liem hit Washinton, her blood alcohol level was .215

Washington's mother, Mattie Jean Johnson, has now filed a lawsuit against Rick's Cabaret.  As part of the lawsuit, she alleges that "Rick's encourages customers to buy drinks for dancers without providing the sometimes inebriated women safe transport home".

Later today, we'll discuss whether you can blame this on the topless bar?

As an aside, stock in Rick's is currently tradfing for approximately $4.70 per share.  In other words, it costs more to buy a share of Rick's than it does to buy a share of General Motors.  Go figure!
